Skaftafell
The Skaftafell National Park was established on 15 September 1967. Originally covering an area of 500 km2, the park was enlarged to 1700 km2 in 1984, then again in 2004, this time to 4807 km2. The Park covered approximately two thirds of the Vatnajökull ice cap. It is now part of the Vatnajökull National Park.
Park rangers and other staff operate in the Park during the summer months. Their role is to receive guests, provide information about the National Park and ensure that visitors are aware of the rules. Visitors are encouraged to seek information from rangers and other staff.
Hiking trails
A network of hiking trails to suit all tastes and abilities covers most of the Skaftafell area. Work is underway to improve access to the glaciers with marked hiking trails and vehicle tracks. An interactive map on this website contains a range of useful information on Skaftafell and its surroundings, with descriptions and photos of the terrain and hiking trails. An interactive map has been set up. Access the map here.
