Many unique locations within Vatnajökull National Park are very popular tourist destinations. In the management of these destinations, Vatnajökull National Park emphasises the importance of providing visitors with a positive service experience and that sustainability be a guiding principle in the interactions with all companies that organise trips or offer other kinds of services in the relevant areas.
Current contracts with private businesses
On July 4, 2025, an advertisement was issued for applications for contracts for ice cave tours and glacier walks on Breiðamerkurjökull (west and east of Jökulsárlón), Falljökull/Virkisjökull and Skeiðarárjökull. The companies' contracts are valid from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2027.
Contracts for the operation of food trucks at Jökulsárlón
On February 9, 2024, an advertisement was issued for applications from operators wishing to operate food trucks at Jökulsárlón for the period June 1, 2024 to May 30, 2026, with the possibility of an extension for one year. The advertisement stated that contracts would be made with three operators, and this was done. The operators are Local Langoustine ehf., Jöklabiti ehf. and Fancy Sheep ehf.
