Askja & Herðubreiðarlindir
At Drekagil and Herðubreiðarlindir, the Akureyri Touring Club offers accommodation in huts and campgrounds with bathrooms. There is no gas station in Drekagil or Herðubreiðarlindir. In the summer of 2023, it is planned to open a small restaurant in Drekagil.

There are more cabins in the highlands north of Vatnajökull that could be useful for travelers in the area:
- Suðurárbotnar: A hut managed by Akureyri Tourist Association. The cabin is unlocked. Use and accommodation in the cabin must be booked with the travel company.
- Dyngjufjalladalur: A hut managed by Akureyri Travel Association. The cabin is unlocked. Use and accommodation in the cabin must be booked with the travel company.
- Bræðrafell: A hut managed by Akureyri Tourist Association. The cabin is locked. Use and accommodation in the cabin must be booked with the travel company. The cabin can only be reached by foot.
- Kistufell: A hut managed by the Rescue Team Stefán in Mývatnsveit. The cabin is open, but you need to contact the Rescue Team before using the cabin.
- Gæsavötn: A hut managed by the Gæsavatnafélag. The cabin is locked and you must contact the company before using the cabin.
