Ranger programs 2019

Interpetation and knowledge

One of the main goals of Vatnajökull national park is to share knowledge about the nature, nature protection, history and cultural heritage of the sites. Over the summer time park rangers offer free educational guided walks and share information at ranger stations. Further information can be found here below and under each area in the top menu.

Visitor centres

Make the visitor centres your first stop The park‘s visitor centres are all located in lowland areas. Each of them has an exhibition about the park‘s nature and cultural heritage. Each also has a souvenir shop with special emphasis on local handicraft and products..

Plan your trip

Many of the parks areas are in the highlands of Iceland. That means that you need a special 4x4 vehicle to travel to these places. Make sure that you have a good map and the right vehicle for your trip. We recommend these sites and tips to help you prepare:

  • Check the conditions on roads at www.road.is
  • Check the weather forecast, weather can change rapidly in Iceland www.vedur.is
  • Get advice and leaver your travel plan at Safetravel
  • Keep in mind that off road driving is always illegal in Iceland
  • Get informed on rules and regulations before your trip
