Vatnajökull National Park sends you its best wishes for the Holidays and for health and happiness throughout the coming year. May our glaciers prosper as well, they really need our unified effort. So perhaps our New Year’s resolution should be to reduce our carbon footprint – we could do a lot worse than that!
On Saturday, November 24th, the Cafeteria in Skaftafell will be closed. That day the Cafeteria will be occupied for an anniversary: 50 years have passed since the regulation of a national park in Skaftafell was accepted.
An improved map brochure for the Jökulsárgljúfur area (Ásbyrgi, Vesturdalur, Dettifoss) was recently published by Vatnajökull National Park. Map resolution is considerably larger than before and the area map for Ásbyrgi has been enlarged.
On behalf of the Icelandic government, the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, have nominated Vatnajökull National Park for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
Today, December 19th, the Visitor Centre and Cafeteria in Skaftafell are closed,at least between 11.00 - 15.00 due to maintainance on electric transmission lines. The closure might be extended if the loss of electricity stays longer. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this may have for our visitors.
Vatnajökull National Park and the Environmental Agency of Iceland recently signed a cooperation agreement regarding supervision and visitor information this summer in the south-central highland of Iceland.
