Hiking trails: Good conditions

Ásbyrgi Visitor Centre and restrooms: The visitor centre is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. Telephone: +354 4707100. Restrooms at the innermost car park in Ásbyrgi canyon are open 24/7.

Ásbyrgi campground: 200-person limit. Check availability and book your campsite at

Roads: The road to the parking at Langavatnshöfði is open. From there it is possible to walk down to Hljóðaklettar. The road down to Vesturdalur was temporally opended on Wednesday, July 28, 2021. It will be closed again for three days at the end of August, exact dates yet unknown.

Toilets: The restrooms next to the ranger building in Vesturdalur are open.

Campground in Vesturdalur: 

The campground is open, with certain restrictions. Please note that it is not permitted to drive motor vehicles on lawns. Traditional tents can only be brought onto the grass lawns (not caravans and trailers). Motorhomes can be parked in designated parking lots as long as space allows.



Roads: Work is underway on a new road and car park. The old road has been filled in, but it is possible to drive to and park in the new car park. From there is a trail (300 m) to an overview above the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. From there you can follow the trail north down to Hólmatungur.

Toilet: The old toilet house has been removed. A new toilet will be built next to the new car park before summer 2022.



Hiking trails: Accessible.

Restrooms: Restroomss on both sides of Dettifoss are open.
