Vonarskarð hiking

Dear visitors as we welcome you to enjoy Vonarskarð we remind you that Vonarskarð is closed for all vehicles and  please walk on the marked and posted paths. 

Hiking trails to Vonarskarð are available from Nýidalur, Svarthöfði and Gjósta. 

 

Nýidalur – Vonarskarð – Nýidalur 

Distance: 12,5 km (one way)
Walking time: 10 hrs 
Path difficulty:
  Challenging (red)

The trail follows Mjóháls ridge into Vonarskarð and leads to the Hverahlíð high temperature geothermal area which has varied geothermal formations. From Mjóháls there is a magnificent view of Nýidalur and Tungnafellsjökull.

 

Gjósta – Vonarskarð – Gjósta 

Distance: 8 km (one way)
Walking time: 3 hrs 
Path difficulty:
  Challenging (red)

The trail follows Gjóstukleif, down into Vonarskarð and on to the Hverahlíð high temperature geothermal area. Views of Vonarskarð and the water-shed, barren landscape and high temperature geothermal area.

 

Svarthöfði – Vonarskarð – Svarthöfði

Distance: 6,5 km (one way)
Walking time: 2,5 hrs

A hike over the pass between Svarthöfði and Kolufell, then along the slopes of Skrauti into Snapadalur and to the Hverahlíð high temperature geothermal area. Magnificent landscape, rhyolite screes, alpine vegetation and high temperature geothermal area.

 

Svarthöfði – Tvílitaskarð – Kvíarvatn

Distance: 8,5 km (circular route) 
Walking time: 3 hrs
