Although the winter in South East Iceland has been rather wet and warm, most tour operators have started their glacier cave season. We would like to point out that visitors should never enter a glacier cave without the minimum safety equipment, which are a helmet and (usually) crampons. The conditions can be different between glacier caves, so there is often need for more extensive equipment, such as an ice axe, harness and a rope. The safest way to visit a glacier cave is with an experienced guide, and here in the area there are many tour operators that offer their service. If you need any information about glacier caves and tours to them, it is possible to contact either Steinunn (steinunnhodd@vjp.is) or Hrafnhildur (hrafnhildur@vjp.is). If you wish to book a tour, it is best to do that through each company‘s website, or at www.visitvatnajokull.is.
