A new travel map of Vatnajökull National Park

Vatnajökull National Park has published a brand new travel map for the national park. The map is in the scale of 1:600.000 and gives information about various activities and features within the park, such as visitor centres, highland ranger stations, campgrounds and hiking areas. The map also indicates special preservation areas and roads which are open to public traffic.

The national park is open at Dettifoss

Due to exstensive filming 21-22 July, access to Dettifoss is controlled. People are led to a very good wiewpoint, slightly further north than usual. People are kindly asked to take no photos but to accept them from the production company on a CD.

Services in Vatnajökull National Park not affected by Múlakvísl

The glacial outburst flood in Múlakvísl has interrupted many travel plans, but services in Vatnajökull National Park have not been affected. There is one minor exception to this: The daily interpretive walk with a ranger has to be cancelled on Wednesdays, and will be so until a new bridge has been built over Múlakvísl.

Glacial Flood in Mýrdalsjökull

A sudden glacial flood originating in Mýrdalsjökull glacier started last night, sweeping away the bridge across the river Múlakvísl on Mýrdalssandur. The road across Mýrdalssandur is closed as a result.

Skaftafell green and attractive again

Skaftafell Visitor Centre re-opened this morning, having been closed for 4 days due to an eruption in Grímsvötn volcano. Ash fell in Skaftafell for 12 hours after the eruption begun and the road to and from Skaftafell was closed for safety reasons. However, strong winds from north and showers of rain have cleansed away most of the ash and Skaftafell is again characterised by lush green vegetation.

Roads open in Jökulsárgljúfur

Road 864, east of Jökulsá River, is now open. Road 862, from Road 85, is also open, but only to Vesturdalur. The part between Vesturdalur and Dettifoss on Road 862 is still closed and it is not known when it will be open.

Summer draws closer in Skaftafell

Summer is almost here and things are getting busier and busier in Skaftafell. In the last couple days there have been over 200 visits in the visitor centre each day, which is quite a step up from the average during the winter.

Skaftafell Visitor Centre will be closed next Saturday, 23 October, from 12:45 due to a funeral. The visitor centre will open again on Sunday morning at 9:00.

Road F88 to Herdubreidarlindir impassable

Road F88 between the Ring road (1) and Herdubreidarlindir is closed due to rising water level in glacial river Jökulsá. The Road Administration suggests roads F905 and F910 to reach Askja.

A new visitor centre opened in East Iceland

Snaefellsstofa, a brand new visitor centre in Vatnajokull National Park, was formally opened yesterday. Snaefellsstofa is an information center and a souvenir shop for tourists, and boasts itself of a new and innovative exhibition.

Traffic delays expected near Dettifoss

The Vatnajökull National Park was created at a formal ceremony on Saturday, 7 June 2008. Over 400 people attended celebrations at the Park's four Visitor Centres.
