Vatnajökull National Park not affected by recent volcanic activity

Visitor centres and campsites in Skaftafell and Jökulsárgljúfur open allready

20.5.2010

Despite Vatnajökull National Park being the venue of countless eruptions throughout the centuries, recent activity in Eyjafjallajökull has not had any impact within the park yet. The visitor centres and campsites in Skaftafell and Jökulsárgljúfur are open allready and the park's staff is looking forward to a busy but enjoyable summer.

The campsite in Skaftafell is actually quite busy allready since early summer is the perfect time of the year to reach Iceland's highest summit, Hvannadalshnjúkur (2.110 m). Last Thursday it was estimated that about 200 people undertook this strenuous but rewarding excursion.
