Work with us for a better environment!
Icelandic nature is vulnerable. Here at the Vatnajökull National Park, we treat nature with respect, and take responsibility for our environmental impact. So we systematically aim to minimise our ecological footprint, and seek the support of our visitors to achieve that goal.
We recycle as much refuse as possible. Clearly labelled recycling bins are located at all main sites in the Park.
You can sort your refuse and reduce its quantity by not bringing unnecessary packaging.
We are making our transport more eco-friendly and reducing use of motor vehicles. Our aim is to plan our trips and use bicycles and fuel-efficient vehicles where possible.
You can opt for eco-friendly transport and share cars, avoid leaving the engine running, and show consideration for walkers and cyclists.
Our purchasing is eco-friendly. We choose eco-certified paper goods, cleaning products and printing.
Help us reduce consumption by not wasting supplies.
We have built the Snæfell Visitor Centre, the first BREEAM* eco-certified building in Iceland. It uses locally sourced building materials and minimises use of pollutants and the design is energy efficient and low-maintenance.
You can visit the Snæfell Visitor Centre and learn about eco-friendly construction and nature's cycles.
Our aim is to meet all legal standards in the environmental field, including water quality and drainage.
You can help us by treating water supplies with care and not disposing of pollutants into the drainage system.
Our dedicated wardens are familiar with the region, respect it and protect it. National Park wardens share their expert knowledge with visitors and offer guided walks for all ages, providing insight into the nature and history of the region.
We want to do even better! Tell us what you think: Pop your suggestions into the Park Wardens' Ideas Box.
